Partnership signed between the ACP Legal Association, the CARO Centre and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Martinique

01 Dec 2021

The team leading the OHADAC project is pleased to announce the signing of a partnership between the OHADAC Regional Arbitration Centre (the CARO Centre), the ACP Legal Association and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Martinique (CCIM).

ACP Legal, chaired by the judge Catherine Sargenti, has been working on harmonizing business law in the Caribbean since 2007, which is a prerequisite for regional integration.

Supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Guadeloupe Islands and ACP Legal, the CARO Centre is part of the operational phase of the OHADAC project. The CARO Centre provides services not just for resolving but also for anticipating disputes while guaranteeing legal security and facilitating access to justice for economic players in the Caribbean region. The Centre is chaired by Sir Dennis Byron, former President of the Caribbean Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Martinique represents over 36,000 traders, manufacturers, and service companies in Martinique. Its mission is to represent the interests of the various economic sectors on the island and to support and assist companies by providing them with key economic and legal information. It also aims to contribute to the economic development of Martinique's regional government.

This collaboration includes arranging joint actions; building the capacity of the CCIM in the area of alternative dispute resolution (ADR); organizing events and training sessions; sharing expertise; pooling resources for business opportunities in the region.

The signing of this agreement will enable the CARO Centre to support the CCIM in the context of the CCIM's projects with an international focus, such as “TEECA” (Trade Enhancement for the Eastern Caribbean), led by the CCIM in partnership with the OECS (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States), as well as in the context of deploying CARICHAM's activities (Caribbean Chambers of Commerce), a network of 21 Caribbean chambers in which the CCIM plays a leading role. The CARO Centre also aims to support Martinique-based companies with their international and inter-regional development.
