Overview of the training on International arbitration / 17 to 23 October 2019 / Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe

06 Nov 2019

affiche-tnThe OHADAC team is pleased to confirm that the training on International arbitration took place at the Maison du Barreau, in Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe) from 17 to 23 October, in collaboration with the Bar association of Guadeloupe, St Martin and St Barthélémy.

This training saw the participation of 38 lawyers registered at the Bar of Guadeloupe, St Martin and St Barthélémy. It was organized in the perspective of the upcoming creation of the OHADAC Centre for arbitration and mediation, thanks to European funds from Interreg V Caribbean cooperation program.

This training has lasted for 5 days (38 hours in total), and was divided in a theoretical part and a practical part.

The theoretical part focused on the fundamentals of international arbitration. It was taught by Prof. Sixto Sanchez LORENZO (Grenade University, Spain), who coordinated the drafting of the OHADAC model law on International Commercial Contracts during the first phase of the OHADAC project and Prof. Jeremy JOURDAN-MARQUES (University of French Antilles).

The practical part was led by Me Marie-Camille PITTON, Avocat at the Bar of Versailles (France), Attorney at law (New York) and OHADAC Consultant for the ACP Legal association and Me Jacques DARCHE, Avocat at the Quebec Bar and Tutor at the Chartered institute of Arbitrators (the Caribbean branch of the Ciarb being a partner of OHADAC). During these two days of practical training, participants were confronted to the myriad of procedural difficulties arising in the course of an arbitration procedure, from the point of view of both the arbitrator and the counsel. Participants were also given the opportunity to draft an arbitral award.

To satisfy the demand of a number of lawyers not able to attend this session, another training session is already scheduled to take place in the Spring of 2020, in Guadeloupe. Other training sessions will be organized in the various territories of French speaking Caribbean in the years to come.
